The Rise and Fall of Christianity in Australia
In the 18th century, religion was so ingrained in Australian society that it would actually shape our entire political debate. The original chaplain to the colony in New South Wales wanted funds from the government to build a church but he had to raise them himself. And then this church which he finally raised money for and had a 500 seat capacity, I think it was the first Christmas service, 30 people turned up. It was later then burnt down. This happened in the medieval period. There was moments when the church had reached this point where it had lost the people. Then you have these different renewal movements going on.
