We always tried to walk that incredibly dangerous tightrope between being historically ruthlessly accurate and having a good time. In 1988 there was a festive special Blackadder's Christmas Carol in which mustache salesman Ebenezer Blackadder is the nicest man in London. But people take advantage of his good nature and he's visited by a ghost, played by Robbie Colchane, who accidentally reveals his predecessors were more ruthless. You talk about current issues, but you do so by setting them in a different time, because then in a way you can make the satire much clearer. I think that's why it worked.
