The History of the Garden City

Every major city in the UK essentially has a garden suburb that was built before the First World War. It's actually a very difficult thing to do, you need to negotiate with all the surrounding landowners and get the capital together. New towns are really a continuation of the garden city idea - they essentially all paid for themselves. The biggest difference between new towns and garden cities is that with new towns the money all went to the treasury rather than being retained locally and reinvested.
