The grim reaper, the black hooded figure like this, is just such a staple of western traditions and western depictions of evil. Ye, did it exist within islamic thought, or within ottoman thought at the time, beyond this one story? And so varlick says this story is actually a pretty excellent reflection of how ottoman moslems of the of the time period generally thought about plague. She character rises as a system of explanations that are ultimately revolving around divine causation, around god.
