Milton thought Paradise Lost to be a book of universal knowledge whose perusal is duty not pleasure. Our modern conception of Satan is indebted heavily to Milton, he believes. We're going to start with the argument that opens book one and then we're going to do it in batches. The first batch being the first 25 lines or so, the beginning of the great epic poem. Then we'll do another batch that takes us up to about 50 lines and we'll do it batch by batch.
