Praying for the Dead

The idea that those who die and are in an imperfect state of purification benefit from our prayers to make them right with God is very much a part of Jewish belief. This is encapsulated by this practice still today of what's called the mourners Qadish, which was recited for 11 months from the day of the death. And you you prayed it for parent, if you're Jewish for parents, children, siblings and in-laws, as well as step parents. It's that notion that they baked into Jewish religious practice.
