The goal at the end is clean energy, because what's being fused here is not carbon. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. So instead of burning fossil fuel, which generates some sort of carbon byproduct, this would generate no byproduct. It's also cheap, relatively cheap, if we can solve this generation problem. The cost that the present moment are extraordinarily high.
