What I Learned in Writing That Book
The book taught me the actual history of America, because in telling the story of this one city you really have to understand how America has worked for the last 200 years. And then number two, it taught me how to write narrative, how to sustain narrative. So I was learning to do moves like that, which I didn't consciously do in my writing before. It felt goofy but it works.
