The self, with the capital S is first born. But and we really don't want to see human civilization or Earth itself as one living organism. The question of how many cells are in there cannot be answered until it's actually played all the way through. And so I think this idea that it just sort of magically shows up at one point runs against everything we know about evolution... These are all slow, continuous.
