The Effect of Anchoring on Public Policy
The psychologist Adam Gillinsky and Thomas Muthweiler proposed more subtle ways to resist the anchoring effect in negotiations. They instructed negotiators to focus their attention and search their memory for arguments against the anchor. The instruction to activate system two was successful. In general, a strategy of deliberately thinking the opposite may be a good defense against anchoring effects because it negates the biased recruitment of thoughts that produces these effects.
