The Twilight of the Elites

In his book, The Twilight of the Elites, Christopher Hayes argues that equality of opportunity ultimately overwhelms equality of outcomes. Are there any points in history that we can look to as like touchstones for generations who did it better? I think big events like wars or things like that or the thing being seen to be out of control have historically led to retrenchment change.
