In 1481, when he was 29 years old, Leonardo sent a letter to the Duke of Milan asking for employment. He stayed in Milan for 17 years, creating some of his most famous works - including the La Supper. It was soon clear that although he had remarkable talents as an engineer, his talents as a painter were really without equal. His application was successful and he left Milan in 1500, after it was invaded by the French,. Then ending up in the service of King Francis of France in 1516, and moving to the Chaturría de Dombos, the king's residence in the Loire Valley; where he remained until his death in 1519 aged 67.
