The Importance of Public Perception in Baseball
Gary Lord Perry, his autobiography is called Me in the Spitter. He became a lovable rascal because he wasn't an angry pitcher. The landscape that Jason's just described for us is so much more nuanced and so much more about the interactions between the players on the opposite team. So I have a question about whether it would make a difference if a game was being played without the presence of an audience. To what extent is the demonstration that you will not stand for your honor being impugned, being performed for a public as opposed to being almost a reflexive reaction to one of these implicit rules?
