The Importance of Johnson's Voting in the Civil Rights Era
Congress passed the 13th, abolishing slavery in the United States in 1865. In 1866, the first-ever Civil Rights law went to Johnson's desk. He vetoed it, Congress overrode that veto. The act declared that all people born within the U.S. were citizens regardless of race, color, or previous quote, condition of slavery or servitude.
