The Meiji Restoration in Japan

In the late 19th century in Japan, the country went through something called the Meiji Restoration. It's worth remembering that for basically about 250 years, even slightly more than that, up to that point, Japan was relatively isolated from the wider world. The aristocratic families of Japan looked at this tendency by Western countries to try and open up these new Asian markets and said, this is not something we want to happen to Japan. In some ways, a century earlier in Japan is where the president lies.
