Learning in a Minimally Guided Environment
Evidence consistently indicates that minimally guided instruction is less effective and less efficient than instructional approaches that place a strong emphasis on guidance of the student learning process. If you're using discovery learning the advantage of guidance begins to recede only when the learners have sufficiently high prior knowledge to provide internal guidance. This is something called the expertise reversal effect which as I already mentioned I've done a previous episode on so you can look that up if you're interested. When you become good enough at something then you start being able to guide yourself whereas if you're not good at it you can't guide yourself and you'll be completely lost.
