Savonarolo's Political Theory

In his treatise on the government of Florence, Savonarola argues that the most perfect constitution for a city would be a monarchy. The Florentines are too intelligent and independent-minded to suffer tyranny, he writes. Instead they find it most natural to follow their long-standing traditions of republican government. He was certainly not the only Renaissance thinker who argued in favor of republicangovernment.
