The History of Waikiki

Waikiki was a sleepy village of dirt roads grasshuts and a few small hotels three miles southeast of downtown Honolulu. When Hawaii became a US territory the same American lawyers and businessmen who had overthrown Queen Liliokalani began transforming it into a tourist destination for wealthy Americans. The man credited with reviving surfing and bringing it to the masses Was due Kahanamoku who met Jack London in 1907. He created an enduring image of the surfer as a godlike athlete Buried to his loins and smoking spray caught up by the sea and flung landward living life as the best of us may live it.
