Is It a Paradox of Being So Dominant?
England has not had to define itself because it is consistently and considers itself to be the leading force. The Irish thing, of course, is a holder of the story, but Englishness is dominant. So maybe it didn't have to rethink itself in those terms for a very long time. But when you do get this sort of increased self presentation of Scottish and Welsh and Irish nationalism, that there's then a bit of resentment.
