Is There a Need for Relating to Something Transcendental?

Yung believed that there is a instinct to relate to the transcendent. And he listed it along with other instincts, just like hunger. In previous centuries, or in some cultures, we have this need met through religion. But increasingly in our world, more and more people are not involved with big, well developed, traditional religions. That leaves that need unmet, and then it can get caught on any number of things. So i am thinking about the term sacred cow. We all may have particular beliefs that cannot be questioned.
