The Origins of the New Guinea Highlands
Homo erectus had made it at least as far as Java more than 1.6 million years ago. Their descendants, or another group of related hominids, had traveled through Sunda Land long before Homo sapiens showed up. In this now-lost environment, the ancestors of today's Aboriginal Australians, Populans, and Melanesians interbred with our archaic relatives not just once, but several times.
