In the late 19th century Berliner and some investors were creating companies several over the years all with the name Gramophone Incorporated. But while the medium had evolved the equipment used to play the media was slower to change. Early playback machines used hand cranked systems. So that meant you had to sit there and you had to turn a crank in order to listen to your recorded album.
