The Role of Video EEG in the Diagnosis of Non-Epileptic Seizures

The gold standard diagnostic tool for functional or non-epileptic seizures is video EEG. Video EEG allows us to see that a seizure event is occurring and to temporarily link that observation with EEG showing that no epileptiform activity is happening in the brain at that time. Accurate diagnosis of NES is critical because if seizures are epileptic, a person is likely to receive anti-Epileptic drugs or AEDs. These medications often work well in terms of producing seizures in people with epilepsy, but they don't work for people with functional seizures.
