RCA offered Jefferson Airplane $25,000 to sign with them. Katz convinced the group that RCA wouldn't give them this money without them having signed a management contract with him. Kalkinan, Cantna, Spence and Bailin all signed without much hesitation. Jack Cassidy also signed the contract right at the start of the first session. It was later revealed that the signature on the contract wasn't Cassidy's and was badly forged. They spent about three months recording their first album, even while continually being attacked as sellouts.
