The book is about a lighthouse keeper in World War One. Tom was born in 1893 and had spent time on the Western Front. He accepted a six-month relief post at the unpopular Janice Rock. While there, he would have regular nightmares about the war. To escape these nightmares, he took a walk on the deck. And as he's walking on the deck, he noticed a light from one of the cabins. A woman that was lying flat against the wall,. And she was pinned there by a man who wasn't really touching her, but he was an inch from her face. So Tom stepped in a cabin, telling the man to leave her alone. The man is grinning
