What Happened to the Unlicensed Gin Trade?
Newly established gin houses were often more welcoming to women than pubs that sold beer. Jin became known by nicknames like ladies delight, mother geneva and mother jin. At least half the people who faced charges for violating gin acts were women. Women also made up as much as three fourths of the people who were imprisoned because they could not afford to pay the fine. The gin acts were deeply unpopular among poor and working class people, leading to riots in 17 37.
