The Importance of Clothing in the 20th Century
Clothing famously played a major role in their trials and sentences. Joan of Arc was revered as a martyr after an inquisitorial court reinvestigated her trial and overturned the verdict. Even to this day, many queer and trans people have reframed Joan as an icon of trans identity. In 1921, silent film comedian Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle was accused of rape and murder after the mysterious death of actress Virginia Rapet following a party in his hotel room.
