The Unfinished Pedestal of Liberty

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist published an illustration of the Statue of Liberty holding a fistful of dollars. 80% of the money needed to build the pedestal was received in sums of less than a dollar. Emily Post worked on the construction site and treated it as her playground, which reminds me of this old episode of Sesame Street.
