The Betrayal Narrative
He got a majority, but he couldn't persuade enough of the cabinet to accept the cuts that he believed needed to be made. To their surprise, he said to them, i'm going o resign. We're all going to resign. I'm going to give up politics. The betrayal narrative doesn't begin immediately, but it quite quickly gathers pace. Over the next three brings the enemy into the go and he ends up with a general election in which he is the leader of 500 conservative mps. He then sought what he called the doctor's mandate. Once that election happened, labour was smashed. And he was left there, almost stranded at top, an increasingly isolated and rather pathetic figure
