Researchers in Australia have found what they believe are written accounts of whales doing this exact same thing 2,000 years ago. Norse descriptions of sea monsters called Havgufa and animals described in medieval beasties may have inspired those accounts. This behavior was first documented in scientific literature in 2017. There's been some speculation that whales have only started doing this recently because of pollution.
