Drinking in the Saloon

Upton Sinclair was pro-prohibition, but he understood the appeal of the working man's saloon. He worried that immigrant drinking presented a threat to the moral health of the country. It can be hard for us now to imagine exactly how much alcohol Americans drank before prohibition. Taverns and saloons were open morning, noon and night.
