The Importance of History in Journalism
I was just fascinated by the history, by the resurgence of memory. And also by some of the parallels between French Algerian history and that of Israel Palestine. Obviously, there were many differences too, but there were also some arresting parallels. So then I started to travel. I went to Lebanon. I was in Palestine,. I was in Algeria, eventually he made his way to Syria, to Egypt. It's not so much that my political convictions changed or that my sense of ethical imperatives became more urgent. But rather that I became aware of a vast set of complexities and nuances that were seldom articulated in the kind of journalism that I had been reading.
