The prison education system is incredibly apache. We've described it as chaotic. It's a lottery in many ways. And offstead have inspected the prison education system and say that two thirds of the prisons that they've inspected provide a poor service. That's quite an indictment. Yet, improving education in prison could have a huge impact on reducing crime in england and wales. Reoffending costs the country an estimated 15 billion pounds a year. Getting prison levers into employment is thought to reduce reoffending by up to nine %. But educating prisoners is a huge challenge for a prison service whose staffing levels went down from nearly 25 thousand in 20 ten to around 18 thousand four years later
