The myth of the noble savage gets used to deny different cultures from history, actual agency and deny their history. There's this presumption that it's all a fantasy projection of the europeans who wrote about it - even though cortes didn't come from a society that was a practising republic. A lot of the way that people think and talk about this is still caught up in these colonial discourses that were invented to dehumanize and degrade people. But like, there's no such thing as a savage, yet, noble or otherwise, there was people with rich political lives. This isn't pre literate people.
