Coinage and Local Exchange
After coinage, you can engage in win-win market exchange potentially with people anywhere in the world. And so say in the middle of back when Herodotus was writing in Athens, the Athenians were building an 80 ton statue of Athena fighting on top of the Acropolis. They needed 70 tons of copper, which came from Cyprus and 10 tons of tin, which they really didn't know where it came from. But a whole bunch of people in Cornwall dug up 10 tons of Tin and then shipped it to Athens. That's what happened after coinage.
