The Effects of Mount Pinotubo on Polar Bear Cubs
In 1992, Nick counted more polar bear cubs than he was expecting to see. The year before, in 1991, temperatures were cooler all around the world and especially here in the sub-arctic. In fact, the sea ice melted, broke up, much later than normal that summer. This reduced the amount of sunlight reaching the earth which cooled the arctic. And so the breakup in 1992 was much later than it had been previously. So these bears that were born in 1992 had their mothers out on the sea ice longer,. came ashore much, much fatter, and were able to put that energy into these cubs.
