There's often this confusion, I find that the reason that the management's do this is because they think somehow they're fooling the market. If you grow earnings and you reduce the share count, you grow earnings per share faster than you grow earnings. But of course, markets are pretty efficient at realizing that there's more earnings per share fewer shares.
