The Cost of the Fuel Tax Credit Scheme
The fuel tax credit scheme costs the budget a bit over $7 billion a year. That makes it one of the most expensive programs that the federal government has. The coal industry and other big recipients of this subsidy, they pay that excise, but then it's paid back to them at the end of the tax year. This is forecast to increase by over 30%, 33% over the next three years.
