The Lost Cause and the Origins of the Lost Cause
In the decades following the Civil War white southerners embraced a mythology known as the Lost Cause. Proponents of the Lost Cause used monuments and textbooks to downplay the horrors of slavery. The task of challenging this revisionist history fell to black parents grandparents churches and community organizations Dr. Ashley Lawrence Sanders is an assistant professor of US and African American History at the University of Colorado Boulder. She also served as a consultant on our series about the Reconstruction era.
