In Leviticus 12, a woman is purified for 33 days in the blood of her purifying. If she gives birth to a male child, it's 66 days; if she has a girl, it's doubled. The rationale could be tied to Genesis 3.16, the increased pain in child bearing. And I think one of the things that Leviticus is showing us and certainly the Israelites who are receiving this instruction for Moses would have been aware of what was going on.
