Predicting Major River Floods Using Space-Based Data

This chapter explores how NASA's GRACE satellites can analyze changes in the gravity field of a river basin to predict the occurrence of major floods. It discusses a study that successfully forecasted a 500-year flooding event in the Missouri River Basin months in advance, proposing that this method can improve flood predictions up to 11 months ahead in areas with snow melt or groundwater contribution.
