The Problem of the One in the Many

The first philosophical question on record is known as the problem of the one in the many. Thales and most of the ancient Greek philosophers concluded there must be a presiding intelligence that holds this world together. In other words, makes it a rational, rationally intelligible whole rather than a chaos.
