Sean Labor's New Legislation Includes Penalties for Digital Platforms Failing to Address Systemic Disinformation and Misinformation

The government has released a draft framework to hold digital platforms responsible for misleading or deliberately deceptive information online. For the first time, ACMA will be empowered to access documents from digital providers related to misinformation and disinformation on their platforms. The proposed authority would not extend to the content of private messages sent online, but it would in the public sphere. Now, Sean Labor has watered down plans to force multinational companies to disclose an unprecedented level of tax information. But amended legislation introduced last week basically winds that back quite significantly.
