The Drake Equation
The drake equation was a hypothetical way of trying to calculate the number of technological civilizations that would be present in our galaxy by multiplying together a bunch of numbers. Shosta ad argues this in the drake equation itself, as we factor in the time it would take for life to evolve and the average lifetime of a technological society. And so there're some patterns we should see repeating all throughout the galaxy.
