The Importance of Metrics in Knowledge Work

Hofstadter's law says that everything takes longer than you think it will. People aren't just doing a single job anymore, they're playing many, many different roles and usually managing a number of different projects. The current knowledge or environment requires a lot more self-management than people are used to. And we haven't trained people on how to do that.
