Introduction
Early medieval doctrine of predestination was formulated initially by disciples of Augustine such as Leo the Great and Prosper of Aquitaine. Today, this classical view of the doctrine has been largely lost from view due to the emergence in the modern period of two rival conceptions of the Augustinian patrimony. John Calvin posited a number of tenets that were to have great effect in modern debates both among Calvin's defenders and critics.
