Socrates asks an Athenian general to define what courage consists in. He says the most obvious answer he can think of is that you stay in formation and stand your ground. But people often exhibit great courage when they're fighting a tactical retreat or charge into the enemy, Socrates said. And so we only by thinking for ourselves get the knack of spotting exceptions from rules.
