Are the Mongols Creating Terror?
There are all of these stories that circulate at this time that indicate how absolutely terrified people were of a potential Mongol invasion. It's difficult to be sure exactly how self-conscious the Mongols are deliberately creating terror. I think it's probably much of the terror people felt is just from the sheer breadth of the Mongol conquests. By the 1240s, virtually no one proves able to stand against them. And they use terror as a very effective weapon.
