In the 1910s two scientists noticed something just eating away at their bacterial samples. This was long before the first real chemical antibiotic, penicillin, was widely available. So there's a couple of decades where actually the world kind of went mad for fages. You had them in everywhere from boots in the UK to Brazilian public hospitals. Hell, we had fages as a medical treatment in the UK. There were various scientific societies brewing up cocktails of different fages.
