The Rise and Fall of Christianity and Liberalism
In the reading and studying of the Bible, that period saw the rise of the higher criticism of Scripture. Sin was being redefined away from transgression of the law of God to mean other things. The supernatural was being called into question in a real way. Lots of Americans were adopting a new creed. And that was the modern creed: universal brotherhood of man, the universal fatherhood of God, and human perfect ability.
